Things that GOOO!

As a young lad, my parents always told me to dream big. And I listened; throughout my youth I had aspirations of being a firefighter, an astronaut, and a hydroplane driver, among other things. Now at nineteen years of age and working as an intern at KidsQuest Children's Museum, I've chosen a slightly different path. But last week, when KidsQuest featured the Vitamin Water hydroplane at the Museum as part of "Things That Go Month," I figured perhaps it wasn't too late to seize my childhood dream. After all, the current driver of the hydroplane, Kayleigh Perkins, didn't start racing until she was nineteen either.

After a day of the little rascals exploring the cockpit, at last it was time for our Museum personnel to hop in. One after another, each member of our staff got behind the wheel (having the time of their life in the process) until it was my turn.

Giddy with excitement, I climbed up and got in the seat. I was surprised to find that the inside of the hydroplane was nothing like I had imagined from watching the races on television. It was tiny. Far too tiny for my 6'4" frame. As I sat there in the cockpit with my shins jammed against the steering wheel, I realized that my hydroplane racing career was over before it had even begun. Devastating to say the least. But though my stature may have outgrown my dream, I can safely say KidsQuest will not have to search for a new intern, as I will be keeping my day job.
