Fear of visiting the doctor?
Come to KidsQuest's Teddy Bear Clinic!
- Separation from you
- Pain
- The doctor's mannerisms
- The unknown
You can help by encouraging your child to express their fears and addressing them in a way they can understand. Explain the purpose of the doctor's visit. If it is a "well-checkup" tell your child the doctor is going to check on how they are growing and developing to make sure they are healthy. Stress that all kids go to the doctor for "healthy" visits. If the visit is to diagnose or treat a condition, let your child know the doctor is going to help fix the issue and make them feel better. Tell your child what to expect during an exam. By helping them be prepared for what they will go through, they may see that it isn"t all that bad. Let them know they will have a chance to ask questions as well. Be sure to tell your child that going to the doctor is not a punishment-everyone does it!
Choosing a doctor who relates well to children is also important. You, of course, want a knowledgeable and competent doctor, but you also want one who understands kids' needs and fears. Don't be afraid to change doctors if your doctor doesn't seem to be a good match with your child. Ask friends and neighbors for referrals!
KidsQuest's annual Teddy Bear Clinic was designed to help alleviate a child's anxiety associated with going to the doctor. At the Teddy Bear Clinic, doctors and nurses from Group Health perform an examination on the child's teddy bear, and not just bears, stuffed elephants, dogs, cats and monkeys are all welcome. Your child's stuffed animal's height, weight, ears, nose and throat are all checked, just like what happens during a real medical exam. Some of the furry friends will also get medical attention like stitches or a band-aid. Your child will see doctors and nurses in the same type of clothing and also see some of the same medical instruments that are at the doctor's office.
Teddy Bear Clinic is a great way, not only to help kids prepare for that next appointment, but also help them learn about caring for someone else. My hope is that your child will have a great day at the Museum, learn about what doctors do, and who knows maybe even want to become one someday!

Very clever idea. Children needs to see their doctors and there shouldn't be any problem seeing their doctor during the visit.
