Fanciful Fairies

FairyWe had a VERY magical week last week. Not only did we get dramatic with our Storybook Theater camp, but we also welcomed some very fanciful fairies into the museum for five days of fairy stories, fairy songs, fairy dances, fairy crafts – everything fairy!

On Monday, after getting to know each other, we made fairy potions, experimented with chemical reactions to make gooey fairy gak, and crafted magic wands for our fairy costumes.

Tuesday’s theme was fairy pets. After experimenting with a circuit ball to learn about electricity, we created electric jitterbugs. (We also took some time to do a fairy dance in the dark with our glowing magic wands.)

FairyPaintThe science got even more fanciful on Wednesday as we concocted a chemical reaction to make our fairies fly, experimented with magnets and static electricity to make things float, and added to our fairy costumes by creating pixie dust necklaces and fairy wings!

On Thursday we painted wind-chimes to attract fairies to our homes and gardens, and crafted gifts for them to find when they stop by. We also built our own fairyland, played a game called “Magic Fairies,” and created crowns for our costumes!

On the last day of camp we finished our costumes by making tulle tutu skirts, then dressed up for a fairy photo shoot. Finally, we went on a treasure hunt, deciphering clues the fairies had left for us to find our very own fairy gifts!

What a week. Science? Check. Magic? Check. Good old-fashioned fanciful fairy fun? Check, check, check!

And the best part is, there’s still another Fanciful Fairies Camp yet to come!
