Happy Grandparents Day!

Sunday, September 11th is National Grandparents Day!
The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with a housewife in West Virginia, to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.

Time Out for Moms

And All Women Interested in Living Healthier Lives

Most of us are bad about taking time out for ourselves. We’re short on time, so we multi-task. We get all the new information we can but don't have a lot of time to search for it or double-check it for accuracy. And the information we get usually regards our kids, not ourselves.

What to do in Washington!

What are you doing for Spring Break?

As Washington Week draws to a close here at KidsQuest, it makes me wonder what our family will do for Spring Break next month. We’re not traveling this year, but another staycation watching videos and eating takeout pizza doesn’t sound very fun. Below are some home state ideas I found for putting the spring back in our break, rain or shine:

A special evening with Melissa d'Arabian!

I had the privilege of spending a couple of hours with Food Network celebrity chef Melissa d'Arabian last Saturday at the Acorn Circle Cocktail Party to benefit KidsQuest Children's Museum. She is the nicest, most genuine and energetic person I have met in a long time, and I was awed by her intelligence, drive and background. And I don't even like to cook!

What is your Back-to-School Tradition?

We run out and purchase our school supplies, get the back-to-school hair cut, and start going to bed a little earlier so life isn't such a shock when classes resume for the school year. For the kids, it is a mixture of excited anticipation for seeing friends again, and dread over the impending homework and structured schedule. For my husband and me, it is relief that the kids will be productively occupied all day once again, and reluctant realization that they are growing up fast. My youngest child just left elementary school, so now I have two teens. Will they be too cool for our Back-to-School traditions? Walking them to the bus stop is out, but I insisted on the first day of school photo. Dinner together that first night to hear all about their first day was also non-negotiable. KidsQuest's Executive Director settled her eldest child into college this year, and still has two teenage boys at home. They continue to enjoy the tradition of laying out new clothes the night before for the first day of school, and going out for a special dinner.
