Adventures in Homeschool Science...

Dissecting WORMS!

I was lucky enough to visit KidsQuest's Homeschool Science class as they tackled a very brave feat: worm dissection. Each student got their own long, thin, crawly thing (although, fortunately, they were no longer crawling), plus rubber gloves, safety goggles, plastic knives and dissection tongs. Here's how it went...

Worm on a plate
Step one: Open 'er up.

Step two: Carefully pin the sides back in order to get a better glimpse at the innards.

Step three: Examine.

There's a lot of brown in a worm. Stacia, our helpful science teacher, informed us that worms eat dirt and the brown stuff (contrary to popular belief) was actually just dirt that had been digested.

I'm proud to say that every single student came out of this experience intact, maybe a little braver even, and certainly a lot more aware of what the inside of a worm looks like. I for one certainly didn't know what the inside of a worm looked like until that class.

Stacia Dissecting Frog

At the end of class everyone crowded around while Stacia opened up the show stoppers: a frog and a fish (warning to all future scientists: the smell is less than enticing). What a great way to learn about Arthropods!

Good luck Homeschoolers—I can't wait to hear what Stacia has "cooked up" for next year's Homeschool Classes starting in September!
